2021 Alberta NDP convention was to debate PR but don't know if debate went on or if time ran out...

here's a resolution that was on programme: C-P2-21: Proportional Representation in Alberta

Whereas Mixed Member Proportional Representation (MMP) has been a successful election system in New Zealand and other countries, more accurately reflecting the wishes and diversity of the electorate; and

Whereas Dual member proportional (DMP) is a made-in-Canada solution that reflects the choices of the electorate while maintaining strong, local representation; and

Whereas proportional representation has been a long-time value of the NDP:

Be it resolved that the Alberta NDP supports the use of a proportional representation system in Alberta for the election of MLAs (Section C, 3.01 of the Policy Book);

and Be it further resolved that the preferred methods of proportional representation shall be Mixed Member Proportional or Dual Member Proportional.

Submitted by Edmonton-West Henday Constituency Association

Here's what I wish it had said (with my additions underlined):

Whereas Dual member proportional (DMP) is a made-in-Canada solution that reflects the choices of the electorate while maintaining strong, local representation; and whereas STV was used effectively for 30 years in provincial elections to produce mixed roughly proportional representation in each major city reflecting the mixed sentiment of each city's voters;

and Whereas proportional representation has been a long-time value of the NDP:

Be it resolved that the Alberta NDP supports the use of a proportional representation system in Alberta for the election of MLAs (Section C, 3.01 of the Policy Book);

and Be it further resolved that the preferred methods of proportional representation shall be Mixed Member Proportional (using Single-Member Plurality or STV) or Dual Member Proportional. ----------- Alberta's experience with STV for 30 years should be remembered.... ==========================================
