Canadian PR 100th anniversaries in 2022
2022 will see the 100th anniversary of these historical PR events:
In those days in Canada, PR meant STV.
In these cases, STV was applied in city-wide at-large districts
Jan. 12, 1922 -- Vancouver held its third city election using STV. R.P. Pettipiece, a member of the Typographical Union, ws elected as well as businessmen.
July 18, 1922 -- Winnipeg voters used PR for second time to elect their MLAs.
Wide balanced representation produced by elected members:
Liberal 2 seats, Conservative 2 seats, Independent Labour Party 3 seats, Moderation League (anti-Prohibition) 1 seat, Independent Worker 1 seat, Progressive (Farmer) 1 seat.
December 1, 1922 - Winnipeg city election this year used PR. This was the third Winnipeg city election to use PR. W.B. Simpson, a member of the Typographical Union, elected.
Dec. 11, 1922 -- Edmonton voted in favour of using PR in city elections. Within a few months, the city adopted PR-STV for city elections.
Dec. 11, 1922 -- Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw used PR-STV for the second time in their city elections. Mixed representation elected -- Members of the Typographical Union were elected in Regina and Saskatoon; in Moose Jaw Labour candidates were elected to three out of the city's ten seats.
Dec. 13, 1922 -- Calgary used PR-STV in its sixth city election. Both Businessman Fred Osborne and Labour activist Fred White - plus others - were elected.
Dec. 13, 1922 -- Vancouver held its third (and last) city election using STV. Pettipiece was re-elected to city council among others.
