1930 Majority for the Conservatives under RB Bennett. Lots of small parties. United Farmers of Alta took 9 seats with 1.46% of the vote
so says
But that seems to be un-necessarily critical of the UFA.
Alberta had 16 MPs at the time.
The UFA took 30.4 percent of the vote and took 9 seats 56 percent of the Alberta seats.
Likely this was in part due the UFA's popularity in rural areas where votes count for more than the cities where the Liberals and Conservaives had strength.
it is said UFA won 9 seats with 1.46 percent of the Canadian vote.
But part of that may be that Alberta had a high number of seats for votes cast, perhaps due to the rural nature of its geography.
1930 UFA ran only 10 candidates and nine of them won.
so that means, all other things being equal, that many of its votes were cast effectively.
57,000 votes in total 1.46 percent of the national vote
UFA won with majority of votes in their districts in almost all cases. Irvine was only exception.
Gardine won with no votes at all -- he won by acclamation.
Acadia Gardiner acclaimed in 1930 so no votes cast
Battle River two-way contest Spencer won with majority UFA 6900 votes in total
Bow River two-way contest Garland won with majority UFA 5800 votes in total
Macleod Coote two-way contest Coote won with majority UFA 6900 votes in total
Peace River Kennedy two-way contest Kennedy won with majority UFA 10,200 votes in total
Camrose Lucas two-way contest Lucas won with majority UFA 6500 votes in total
Vegreville Luchkovich two-way contestLuchkovich won with majority UFA 5500 votes in total
Red Deer Speakman two-way contest Speakman won with majority UFA 6300 votes in total
Wetaskiwin three-way contest Irvine elected with 4800 votes 40 percent of votes cast
and the one UFA defeat was due to the opponent winning with less than majority:
Athabaska Kellner defeated in 1930 Athabaska with 4200 votes Liberal won with less than majority of the votes
if we look at effective votes we see that a total of 57,000 votes went to elect 8 members., of that, only 4200 votes were wasted.
Proportional result?
245 members in HofC X 1.5 percent = 3.6 members
so UFA was due 3.6 members plus one more for Gardiner's win by acclamation.
UFA with 30 percent of the Alberta was due 5 proportionally to Alberta votes cast plus one more for Gardiner's win by acclamation. so were due 6
UFA won three more than that.
Bennett's Conservative meanwhile won 137 seats with 48 percent of the vote.
It was due 118 votes and won 19 more seats than its due.
This may -- or may not -- put UFA's three-seat windfall in perspective.
Under FPTP, a party's seat share is little connected to its vote share.
An advance in vote tally may or may not cause an advance in seat share.
