Alberta had one Senator starting in 1888.
Filling this seat were HBC Richard Hardisty then James Lougheed, grandfather of Peter Lougheed (Alberta premier 1971-1985).
Three more were added in 1905, at the time of granting province-hood to Alberta.
Two more were added in 1915. These were first filled by appointment in Feb. 1918.
But long-standing vacancies can exist. So at various times since 1918, Alberta has not always had four Senators.
Two left in 2020. None have since been appointed. So we have two empty seats now.
Since 1965, Senators have been able to serve only until they reach the age of 75.
So Doug Black and Scott Tannas, appointed in 2013 back when Stephen Harper was prime minister, may serve in the Senate until 2027 and 2037 respectively. And Paula Simons and Patti LaBoucane-Benson, appointed in 2018 , may serve until 2039 and 2044 respectively.
Talk about lack of democratic accountability!
