Let our votes count!
All voters have equal rights under our Constitution!
Here's a message copied from a recent email:
The Animal Protection Party of Canada is considering intervening in Charter Challenge for Fair Voting.
To that end our attorney requested the following:
Do you know anyone who might be able to contribute an affidavit on the following points: 1. One voter (preferably older) who has never voted for a winning candidate in his lifetime (for example because the riding has never elected anyone other than from a single party).
2. One voter in a riding where the MP won without much support from voters and where the MP took steps that would have gone against the wishes of the majority of the population.
[Note that Pat Rehn, Lesser Slave Lake MLA, recently read out of the UCP, was actually elected by a majority of the voters in the district.]
3. One or two voters who didn't vote in an election simply because their vote would have gone to a candidate who had no chance of winning the riding.
4. One voter who has in the past held his/her nose and voted strategically.
If you’re a Canadian voter and might be of assistance, please contact me directly.
Our intervention is based on the rights of citizens, not fairness to political parties, per se. In Canada, today, most Canadians do not have an MP whom they voted for who can—or will—equally and effectively represent them in the House of Commons. Specifically, a citizen who voted Liberal in Calgary Nose Hill is effectively disenfranchised. They don’t have a Member of Parliament who will represent them in the House of Commons. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees citizens “equal benefit of the law.” First-Past-the-Post denies most citizens that right.
