Fair representation for all through STV and multi-member districts

STV is a bold, comprehensive solution to our problems with partisan gerrymandering and uncompetitive elections.

These problems partially arise from the very fact that we divide voters in separate small districts.

A winner-take-all system in which only one person is elected to represent each district no longer works in this era of multiple parties having large groups of supporters in each district. It locks most voters into districts that are skewed toward one party and leaves many voters unrepresented and powerless to see their votes have any effect on the results.

Single-winner districts no longer work well for Canadian democracy. Many seats are completely safe for the party that holds them. Millions of voters -- whether urban Conservatives, Liberals, New Democrats and Greens voting against all hope in Conservative Prairie provinces, women, Natives and other minorities -- are dramatically underrepresented, with little chance of fixing this at the polls.

But through PR, multi-winner districts allow a large proportion of voters to elect someone from a party they support. STV elections produce mixed roughly -proportional representation so today’s skewed outcomes -- where a party wins far more seats than its due -- become a thing of the past. Larger districts defeat gerrymandering because the district lines simply matter less. And large districts waste fewer votes than our small single-member districts currently cause,

With proportional outcomes and a wider variety of candidates running in each district in an election, STV will create more fairness for women, people of color, urban Conservatives, rural Liberals and rural New Democrats.

Changing to PR is the most complete method of producing voter equality, fair representation and greater choice. It’s how we can make our democracy work for everyone.
