First podcast of Graham Lettner's Physical Copy - Amanda Henry on benefits of district-level PR

Updated: Jun 27

Graham Lettner, tireless campaigner for electoral reform, has published the first podcast under Physical Copy label.

Amanda Henry, NDP activist and party worker, revealed several not-generally-known benefits to be expected from the institution of PR.

I noted that:

Amanda is very persuasive about the benefits of having multiple members from a district - the interaction of MLAs of diff. persuasions from the same district being seen at the same event and them being able to discuss issues outside of the (rancorous) House will improve prevailing political culture, and fight dis-information,

so PR with MMDs will give benefits that are in addition to offering voter wider choice, and having a much higher percentage of votes cast actually used to elect a representative. She was quite clear about how with MMDs and a quota used to determine winners, a candidate will not need to try to beat out all other contenders in the district but can concentrate on just getting enough votes to pass quota, perhaps a fifth or a sixth of votes cast in a 5-seat district.

These are positive effects not often discussed elsewhere.

Looking forward to next instalment of Physical Copy!
