Let us abandon the Confusionists ! (1936)

Updated: Jan 23, 2023

Let us abandon the Confusionists who seek easy fortunes and break up our unity, to seek their own selfish ends.

- from "Why I voted for Franklin D. Roosevelt," Chicago Times, Nov. 2, 1936

Reasons given for voting for FDR were:

A proven American leader, with true Christian principles, honorable, fair, just and impartial towards every law-abiding citizen from the banker to the farmer, regardless of class, creed, race or religious belief; progressive, willing to accept constructive criticism for improvements that will benefit the American people in general.

I give below a few of the fundamentals, essential for national unity:

1. Human necessities first—Luxuries last.

2. Shorten hours to balance labor-saving devices, which will put a definite end to unemployment. All classes to share and share alike by means of a fair distribution which will make an inventor a God's blessing and not a human curse.

3. Stop wars by taking the profit out of wars.

4. Franklin Delano Roosevelt will put a stop to fraudulent business practices in stocks, bonds, banking, etc., for the protection of innocent citizens, to prevent a disastrous confiscatory repetition of the fiasco of 1932, which took our savings, our homes, our farms and our fortunes (those that did not fall in the ocean). Those fortunes lost to us, the American people are now in the hands of the International Money Trust Bankers, the munition war lords and their selfish agents who, through their manipulation got control of our necessities and systematically starved us in the midst of plenty —when our nation's stores were overstocked with the prime necessities of life. Starvation and misery breed Radicalism and Communism, whereas peace and plenty convert men into law-abiding citizens. Herbert Hoover came to our rescue (?) by freeing the American people from collecting their billions of war debts, by giving the warring nations a moratorium—which is an unbalanced American burden—not a balanced budget!

Let us abandon the Confusionists who seek easy fortunes and break up our unity, to seek their own selfish ends. Let us remain with our American form of government and meet our obstacles as time advances.

Now, who are the bitter enemies of our beloved President in this election? Not the American Bankers, business men, laborers or the farmers, nor the churches. We are satisfied with our present progress, since F. D. R. took the leadership, in spite of the powerful obstructionists of the International Money Trust, who can well afford, with our hard-earned money to spread false propaganda to a few of the higher agents of our own people—yea who have turned traitors on us for their own selfish ends by trying to get back the control of our government. I therefore appeal to our fellow citizens to assure their own future by casting your vote for Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the rest of the honorable statesmen who prove truly to be for the welfare of our people in general, and in doing so, we will render to Almighty God the greatest Thanksgiving of all time! Your sincere Fellow-Citizen,

N. SCHACHTER, 2432 Linden Place, Chicago, Illinois.
