Math is funny

Tom Monto

just a couple things...

Taking from one side to give to the other in a zero-sum game makes a huge difference to the ratio between them.

It is said "start with 50/50 and give 5% to one side by taking it from the other and you have 55/45, one side now having 22% more than the other"

But actually he is not moving 5 percent but 10 percent of the 50.

He should say

"start with 50/50 and give an extra 10 percent of the 50 (5 percent) to one side by taking it from the other, and you have 55/45, one side now having 22 percent more than the other and the other having 18 percent fewer than the other, but actually only 10 percent difference between them (two times the five percent that was moved). Up by moderate and down just a little say you have 50.

increase that by half (50 percent, times by 1.5), you have 75 decrease that by one third (1/3rd) and you are back at 50.
