Police forces in old Alberta

Tom Monto

1874 Mounties establish Calgary and Fort Saskatchewan (Sturgeon River Post)


subsequently many Mountie posts established throughout Alberta, although sparser in the North Country.


Edmonton 1892

Strathcona 1900 [?] after establishment as a town

(only city in Alberta that is no longer a municipality]


1920s[?] -1940s [?] Smoky Lake had town constable.

[Smoky Lake museum has info on this.]


Leduc at one point had a town constable. Jack Oswald served in that post in the 1960s. The town council eventually contracted with the Mounties for that service. (South Edmonton Saga, p. 883)


1980s Hinton had town police force [I believe]


2013

six such municipal police services in Calgary, Camrose, Edmonton, Medicine Hat, Lacombe and Taber.
