John Whitnah Leedy, of 10278 89th Street.

author of The proposed provincial banking law for the province of Alberta [1930?]. published in Edmonton by the author. 30 pages.

"Prepared for attachment to petition as provided by the Direct Legislation Act of the Province of Alberta asking a plebiscite on the question of whether or not this proposed banking act shall be enacted into law in the Province of Alberta."

(Internet Archives:

no newspaper mention of Leedy's 1930 petition has been found; no referendum on banking was held. (but that Leedy was pushing in this way for that purpose fits the pattern.

(see Montopedia blog: Social Credit in Alberta)

As well, one reference (Golden Province?) says the 1930 election was a referendum on the creation of a publicly owned bank.

Aberhart and Social Credit

Hilly Hill later recalled that he worked with Aberhart to produce SC pamphlets in winter 1932/1933.

the pamphlets might be "Study group features," said to be produced 1932-1933 (Peel 5597)

copies are scarce but Bruce Peel Special Collection has no. 5 included in what is called "SC printed material".

the group is described as "Ephemeral information on the Social Credit movement founded by former Alberta Premier William Aberhart, circa 1934. "Study Group Feature No. 5" consists of academic material on the Social Credit System with handwritten notes, featuring "The Perfect Circle, the Blood Stream of the State." An unanswered questionnaire measuring agreement with the demand to increase the food quota and implement a clothing allowance has handwritten notes and doodles on the verso by Mr. Aberhart, dated Tuesday, February 5, and includes an illustration titled "Do it at once moment." Two of the newspaper clippings are articles titled "Chronicle Question Box" and consist of separated questions and answers on Social Credit, and the third is a photographic print of Aberhart."
