Two-thirds of voters did not vote for elected MP in some districts in 2019

Under the un-proportional voting system we use (the so-called First Past the post system) each district elects only one representative. Many voters are “represented” by MPs they didn’t vote for. Even in a very safe seat, where 70% voted for the winner, a large minority (30%) of voters are not represented by someone with political views like their own.

In districts where the votes are more equally distributed among the candidates, it can happen that more than two-thirds of the district's voters cast votes for candidates other than the elected MP.

In Mixed-Member Proportional systems, such unfairness at the district elections would be fixed through allocation of compensatory additional members. the allocation based on overall party vote tallies.

Under STV, districts would elect more than one member. This allows representation to be more proportionally distributed even without the use of additional members.
